England Squash National League

Full results from around the country show us sitting at the top of the
League after the first week of matches. Good news for us was that the other
two matches in our division ended up sharing the points with 3-2 results.
The big surprise was that Chichester beat Connaught, with a usually
reliable Iain Higgins loosing at 4th string for Connaught!
All teams were missing their 'big guns' last night with the exception of
Edgbaston's Del Harris who did not make the England team down under,
therefore giving them a boost against a weekend Manchester side.
Our strength and depth of our young squad (average age last night was 22
including old boy, 32 yr old Danny!) allows us to field quality players
when Mark & Rodney are unavailable. They may be tested again in two weeks
time against Guildford when we expect to field the same team, depending on
Sue Rose's recovery from her latest setback (an allergy reaction to
medication prevented her joining last nights party - we wish her a very
speedy recovery).
Next home game is against Connaught on 30th October. We really want a good
crowd out to support the team so make sure that you don't book anything in
your diaries for that day and get down to the Club to support your team.
Brian Hargrave, National League Administrator, summarises the nights events
as follows;
Defending champions, Edgbaston Priory UOB gave departing Team Captain
Dave Clarke the memory of a 4-1 victory to take with him to New Zealand. No 1
string Del Harris took a convincing 2-0 lead on the home sides show court -
recently equipped with a new floor - only to complain along with Nick
Taylor about a slippery surface as the game progressed. So at 2-0 a change
of court was agreed but saw a change of player in Harris who promptly lost
the following 3 games on the 2nd show court. Newcomers Wolverhampton upset
Benz- Bavarian Duffield thanks to Joey Barrington beating James Willstrop
3-2 and 34 year old Mark Cairns defeating Adrian Grant 3-0 in the deciding
rubber.
Triage Broxbourne proved too strong with a comfortable 4-1 win against
Lee-on Solent. Unisport Guildford lost 2-3 to Lexden with Peter Barker
losing 10-8 in the fifth to David Woodman and captain Steven Meads losing
in the same fashion to fellow captain Tony Hands in the deciding rubber.
Suzie Pierrepont also lost two rubbers by the same score to rub salt into
the wounds.
Team Chichester squeezed home 3-2 against UK Packaging with excellent
performances from Tim Vail, who beat Lee Jemmett 3-1, and Ben Garner who
beat Iain Higgins by the same score. Team captain Peter Genever completed a
hatrick of 3-1 results for the Sussex team when he beat Tim Garner.
