The Dangers of NOT Warming Up
On Monday, registered Osteopath Sarah, tore the
muscles in her calf whilst on court. She thanks those who assisted her and
for the lift to A&E. At first it looked as if the Achilles had ruptured but
after a period of rest and painkillers it was a relief for Sarah to find it
intact.
As an Osteopath, apart from feeling very embarrassed Sarah has since been
able to reflect on how this happened. The orthopaedic consultant who
examined her said that these types of injury seem to occur more frequently
in the 40 plus age group. It is evident that through our teenage years into
our thirties, we can get away with murder when it comes to exercise. In
Sarah's case she has always been athletic and active with a clear injury
history. Injuries were happening to others, certainly not to her and she
says she can admit to taking her body for granted.
Three years ago she tore the Achilles on her other leg and thought she had
learned a lesson. She can remember being baffled as to why it had happened
and at the time put it down to playing too quickly after a bad virus. To do
this a second time and to her other leg means an immediate review as she
does not intend there being a third!
Sarah has kindly taken the time to note some hints and tips on injury
prevention which she feels are worth highlighting in the hope of saving
others from going through the pain and humiliation of this type of sudden
and debilitating injury.
