Jonathan won the U17 Essex JO last weekend
played at Harlow Leisure Centre beating Will Newnham from Sussex in the
final 3 - 2. (9/6 9/4 1/9 4/9 9/4)
It was a very competitive hard fought match
with good sportmanship shown by both players.
The first 2 games went to Jonathan after some
terrific rallies that saw both players covering all 4 corners of the court
and keeping in play shots that they would normally have expected to
be winners. After a family team talk, Will returned all fired up for the
3rd which, combined with some unforced drop shot errors from Jonathan,
resulted in him comfortably taking the game 9-1. Having lost to
Jonathan in the final of the Tom Elton Barrett tournament at Bishop
Stortford 2 weeks previously Will pulled out all the stops and pressed
home in the fourth to level the match at 2 games all. With both players
now having little energy reserves left it was a matter of sheer
determination and "will to win" that brought victory for Jonathan 9/4 in
the 5th.
