Herts Junior Squash Open - 2005
JUNIOR SQUASH  Mar 2005

This year's entry was excellent with over 65 competitors (6 of whom were Nationally ranked) from as far as Warwickshire, Nottinghamshire and Sussex.

All entrants received a commemorative t-shirt promoting World Squash Day (scheduled for 19 Mar) and also Londons bid to host the Olympic Games urging squash to be included as one of the sports.

The girls under 13 event was a straight final, UK no 9 from Hertfordshire Jemma Ockwell defeated Emily Berwick (Kent) 9-4 10-9 9-1.

The girls under 11 event had 7 entrants, matches were best of 3 games point a rally to 9. Jessica Foster (Herts) defeated B/Stortford's Natasha Drake in a very close Final 9-6 5-9 9-2.

The Plate final was one by Chantry Squash Club's Ashleigh Booth 9-8 9-1 against B/Stortford's Brogan Lane who was playing her first tournament.

The Boys under 11 was won by the stylish Cameron Western from Sussex, he beat Chris Abel (Notts) 9-2 9-2 9-2 in the Final.

The Plate Final was won by Brian Harvey (Warks) who beat B/Stortford's Samuel Kightley 9-1 9-0 9-1. Matthew Moore and Edward Lawson (both from B/Stortford) did very well in their first ever tournament.

The Boys under 13 was a top quality event, the first shock was number 3/4 seed B/Stortford's James Grimston losing to Nathan Derrick (Herts) in 3 close games. Nathan was unable to capitalise on this win losing to B/Stortford's Nicholas Mulvey 1-9 10-8 9-6 9-2 in the next round.

Number 2 seed Declan Osborn (Beds) overcame Oliver Horton (Essex) in an epic quarter-final match eventually winning 10-8 9-7 4-9 6-9 9-5.

Declan went on to reach the Final after beating James Cultien from Norfolk 9-1 2-9 9-3 9-5.

In the Final he met B/Stortford's Tim Dixon who had progressed quietly through the event dropping only a handful of points.

Tim Dixon put in a virtuoso performance in the Final by beating Declan 9-7 9-3 9-1, Tim's choice of shot and excellent court coverage was too much for Declan's flamboyant play.

The Plate Final was won in five games by Rhys Taylor (Essex) who beat Elliot Knight (Kent). Elliot had earlier scored an excellent win beating James Grimston 3-2 in the semi-final.

The Boys under 15 was boosted by the entry of UK number 5 Oliver Dixon from B/Stortford. He was untroubled on his way to the Final beating a game Daniel McGinn (Cambs) 9-5 9-2 9-2 in the semi's.
