Herts Junior Open 2002

Bishop’s Stortford Squash Club host Herts Junior Open

Saturday the 9th and 10th March saw Bishop Stortford squash Club entertain 104 entrants into the Herts Junior Open under 15 , 13 and under 11’s. With the biggest draw the event has yet received the competition promised to be an enthralling exhibition of young up and coming squash talent. With the club itself having high hopes for many of its own juniors especially Herts county u13 players Oliver Dixon and Daniel Sciberras in the under 13’s event.

The Under 15’s event was the largest and the most competitive with many top junior county players having entered we were promised some excellent matches. In the latter stages we were lucky enough to witness some lower ranked players topple the favoured seeds. With Luke Gray having defeated Jonathan Fuller 1st round he went on to the final defeating Steven London and Anthony Garrett on the way. In the other half, Herts U15 number 1 Neil Waller continued his impressive form by defeating the number 1 seed Alex Philips in the quarters and Number 3 seed Sam Smith in the semi’s before going on to defeat Luke Gray 3-0 in the final. In the plate, Herts player Jonathan Fuller completed a comfortable 3-0 win against Scott Legg.

Under 13’s was as competitive as the under 15’s with the exception of Alex Ingham the favourite comfortably getting through his rounds to the final. We witnessed a titanic battle Between Nikhil Shah and Oliver Dixon in the quarter-finals, which saw the Stortford based player come back from 2-0 down to win a marathon match 3-2 and then go on to the final having defeated number 2 seed Jack Burgess in the semi’s. This is where his progress was halted with Alex Ingham displaying a full range of shots and touch which on the day was too accurate for Oliver to match. The final was won 9/2 9/3 9/6. The plate was by Daniel Sciberras who defeated Steven Snelling 3-2 in another titanic match 9/2 7/9 9/10 9/3 9/6.

The under 11’s showed us the talent and potential coming through at the moment. With precise accurate shots and good court coverage, we were again treated to a feast of good matches. The final was won by number 1 seed Ben Lampon against Arjun Shah 3-0.

The girls events were, sadly, poorly subscribed but those that played enjoyed some good competition.  The U15 was won by Siobhan Collingwood while the U13 was won by Katherine Reilly.
