REPORT FOR INTERCOUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS 2002/3

STAGE I BOYS UNDER 13

PONTEFRACT 9-10 NOVEMBER 2002

Location:

Pontefract Squash Club, Pontefract, W. Yorkshire

Match Schedule:

Saturday 13:00 v Gloucestershire

Saturday 17:00 v Yorkshire

Sunday 11:00 v Lancashire

Team:

Oliver Dixon, Rhys Thomas, Philip Waller, Tim Dixon, Tom Elliott, Elliot Benfield

Report:

This was never going to be an easy event with such a young and inexperienced team compared with last year. Yorkshire and Lancashire had extremely strong teams, and Gloucestershire only slightly less so. Between the three opposition teams, there were no less than 5 of the top 20 England under 13 boys playing. However, our squad of six boys played valliantly and despite the resounding defeat overall to finish 4th out of 4, the experience was invaluable, the boys enjoyed themselves and developed a good team spirit.

Notable performances included Tim Dixon winning Hertfordshire’s only two matches with an enthralling show of "true grit" coming back from being a game down twice to win in five against Daniel Ince of Lancashire; Tom Elliot’s narrow defeat in an exhausting 5 setter against Nick Reeder-Katsipis (Glouc); Oliver Dixon’s determination to show he is top 20 quality by taking Ky Hibberd (Lancs), ranked 13, to five; and Elliot Benfield’s graceful acceptance of being 6th string throughout.

The full results are attached.

My thanks go to the boys who tried their very best and to the parents who came along to support. At this age I think parental support is all the more appreciated by the boys and added to a very enjoyable weekend.
