Herts Closed Championships 2004

 Another good entry for the Championships across the county, showing great strength and talent in all categories.

Our thanks firstly must go to Intregal for sponsoring this years event, for providing tournament t-shirts, and for the company’s presence in the form of James Ockwell to be available for the presentations on finals night.

The Mens Closed competition reached its climax with the numbers 1 and 3 seeds taking to the court. Last years holder Keith Timms ( Broxborne ) against the county captain Jason Foster ( Bishops Stortford ) Whilst the squash was exciting and highly entertaining Jason proved to strong on the night and took the title 3/0. 9/6 9/2 9/2.

Mens Over 35 – with Jason obviously on a bit of a roll this year he took to the court against Martin White in the final of the overs 35 competition. Obviously not keen to stay on court very long before his Closed final Jason took the title comfortably 3/0 – 9/0,9/1,9/0. Martin wasn’t too disappointed his aim was to get a point which true to his word he did!!!!

2003 Ladies County Champion Zoe Smith ( Broxbourne ) regained her title albeit with a new surname due to her marriage to Rodney Durbach in May. Congratulation Zoe, and  well done for taking the title for the second year running beating Isobel Smith ( HCC ) 3/0 – 9/1,9/3,9/2

Mens Veterans – Peter Leary ( St Albans ) 2003 champion regained his title with a victory over Robert Last 3/1.

Ladies Veterans – This must be a first in the County Championships – TWINS in a final. Maureen Winter and Sheila Blake reached the final of the Ladies veterans competition. Both girls had entered both the Closed and the Vets competition had come up against tough opposition all week. Finalists in any competition get nervous before the event, but, imagine playing your sister or brother How do you cope with the nerves? Well they did, there Mum and Dad survived the match and they played some terrific squash with Maureen being that bit stronger on the night and taking the title 3/0

Mens Vintage – A new Champion for 2004. After a terrific 5 set final Malcolm Newton took the title from Tony Clifford.
