A fantastic night was spent at HCC for the Cup Finals on May 23rd.
The Junior Cup (for teams in divisions 3,4 and 5) was hotly contested by Royston (from the 4th division) and Hawks 1 (from the 3rd division) making the finals. A close match followed with Hawks taking wins in the 4th and 5th string matches 3-0.
It all seemed like it was going Hawks’ way but Royston picked up their first rubber at number 3. Mark Oppen, having taken the first 2 games against Rob Brooks, eventually pulled through in the 5th game.
The 2nd string was even tighter, Royston once again went 2 games up but Mick Hynes of Hawks was having none of it and pulled the 3rd & 4th back 10/8 and 9/7. The fifth could have gone either way as both players tired Paul Cook of Royston managed to clinch the match 9/7 in the 5th.
With things set at 2-2 the first strings of James Paxman of Royston and Davide Argiolas of Hawks took to the stage in front of a crowded gallery. Davide picked up the first 9/7 but a motivated and strong James battled through to clinch a 10/8 victory in the 4th. Royston won 3-2.
The Senior Cup (for teams in divisions 1 & 2) was somewhat one-sided. Bishops’ Stortford having won both the Essex and Herts division 1 titles decided there was room in the trophy cabinet for one more. They brought out the ‘big guns’ and Berkhamsted 1, with a weakened side, never stood a chance. Ali Coker and Richard Carr of Berko did manage to pick up individual games and give their opponents a bit of concern, however the result was inevitable - 5-0 to Stortford.
A presentation followed with cups for each individual player and also magnificent trophies for the winning sides. All trophies (and T shirts for each players) were kindly donated by Gary Spindler of Just Squash who came along to make the presentations.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the teams involved. They all brought along teams of supporters who gave a great atmosphere to the evening. Everyone played in good spirit which made it so enjoyable for everyone to watch. Thank you.
Thanks too go to Dominic, Isobel and Jason who helped organise the event, and to HCC for hosting it. Also to Gary Spindler for his generosity in paying for the trophies.
Any comments or suggestions on how to make this an even bigger success next year are welcome. Please think about it, discuss with your teams and let me know your ideas.
