Herts Girls Squash Newsletter

HERTS GIRLS SQUASH Newsletter…July 2008

We hope that you all enjoyed and had success last season, and as you relax in the July heatwave, we hope you are looking forward to the fast-approaching 2008-9 season. Congratulations go to the U-15 county team who reached the National finals..well done girls!! Many girls are now playing for their club adult teams, five have national rankings and there is an excellent crop of younger stars making their mark and developing rapidly. This newsletter gives details of last season as well as the calendar of events up to Christmas. Next season Herts will be fielding U-13 and U-17 teams in the England Squash Inter-county competition, with friendlies for other age groups. With the County Championships being held in September, please try to play as much as possible so you’re not rusty!! If you have any questions please call Julian Craxton (Girls’ county organiser) on 07711 748557.

ENGLAND RANKINGS… congratulations to:
U-17 at 14 Jemma Ockwell (Jemma reached U-15 number 3 before her 15th
birthday) and at 29 Brogan Lane.
U-15 at 6 Brogan Lane and at 46 Anna Bradly
U-13 at 20 Hannah Mulvey and at 21 Hannah Daly

COUNTY MATCHES
England Squash Inter-county U-15
Stage 1 ..Oct 14th (St George’s, Surrey): the team came second overall, just one point behind hosts Surrey. Against Surrey we lost 2-3 with wins for number 1 Jemma Ockwell and third string Rachael Foster but the other three matches resulted in narrow defeats. Fortunately the team bounced back to defeat both Sussex (5-0) and Kent (5-0) to secure enough points to go through to Stage 2.
Stage 2 ..Jan 27th (Cannons, St Albans): revenge was gained over Surrey with
a narrow 3-2 win and this proved to be the crucial result of the day, ensuring Herts would qualify for the National finals. Against both Bucks and Essex, Herts won 5-0 with all 5 players winning 3-0 in both matches.
NATIONAL FINALS (top 4 counties at Manchester) March 15-16
Semi-final: Herts 3 S.E.Wales 2…Jessica Foster and Charity Price found
it tough-going at 4th and 5th strings but top 3 Jemma Ockwell,
Brogan Lane and Rachael Foster came through tough matches to
take the team to Sunday’s final.
Final: Herts 0 Yorkshire 5…two years ago Herts beat Yorkshire to win
the U-13 national title but this time Yorkshire were much stronger
as only Brogan managed to get a game in a 1-3 loss…nevertheless
it was a great effort to reach the final !!
Squad : Jemma Ockwell (Radlett), Brogan Lane (B Stortford), Rachael Foster (Cannons), Anna Bradly (Cannons), Jessica Foster (Cannons), Charity Price (Gosling) and Natasha Drake (B Stortford).

England Squash Inter-county U-13

Stage 1..Nov 4th (Cannons): with number 1 Jessica Foster out injured, Herts fielded a very young and inexperienced team, losing 0-3 to Surrey and 1-2 against Essex. Nine year old Grace Gear won 3-0 at 2nd string against Essex and gave her Surrey opponent a tough game. With Essex bringing a reserve it was a good opportunity to give 6 girls county experience.
Stage 2..Feb 3rd (Witney): after the withdrawal of Sussex, the team only
had hosts Oxfordshire to play and all 4 girls won their matches..Hannah Daly
(3-0), Grace Gear (3-0), Bethan Price (3-1) and Annabelle Gay (3-1)

Team: Hannah Daly (Broxbourne), Grace Gear (Gosling), Annabelle Gay (Harpenden), Sarah Brown (Radlett), Amy Flood (Radlett) and Bethan Price (Gosling).

County U-11 Mixed Team

v Middlesex..Jan 26th (Finchley Manor)..Hannah Daly and Grace Gear
won all their matches to help Herts win 28-6.

Southern Counties U-11 Festival..May 3rd-4th (Christs Hospital, Horsham).
Grace Gear, playing at number 4, won all 4 of her matches against boys from
Sussex, Kent, Middlesex and Hampshire.Despite her efforts, Herts had to settle for 2nd place…(Sussex 62 points, Herts 61, Kent 59, Hampshire 24, Middlesex 6)
