Hertfordshire Junior Closed 2006
Hertfordshire Closed U19 Boys 2006
30th September – 1st October 2006 This years U19 Herts Closed was held at Berkhamsted Lawn Tennis & Squash club with a convenient 16 player draw. With several of these players having competed in the U17 age group at Cannons the previous weekend, it is encouraging that Herts now has a keen and talented group of young players which we are beginning to see filter into the men’s teams and club leagues - good news for game. There were many excellent matches throughout the weekend with the top three seeds Jonathan Fuller, Adrian Waller and Olly Dixon comfortably reaching the Sunday semis. Rhys Thomas had more of a struggle against his Gosling stable buddy, Ryan Mays, but prevailed 3-1 in a well fought match. Both Jonathan Fuller and Adrian Waller arrived on Sunday morning ready for business and proceeded to record efficient 3-0 victories over their respective opponents to claim their places in the Final that afternoon: Adrian Waller v Jonathan Fuller The show court was packed and the crowd was treated to some excellent squash. Jonathan played extremely well and raised his game to make Adrian, the U15 British Champion in 2004 and current England U17 player, work hard for every point. The experience of Adrian however, the younger player, came through with the final score of 9/4, 9/3, 9/4 not really depicting the quality of the match. A thoroughly enjoyable match which was professionally marked by Gill Wood who, whilst having no trouble from the players, had to reprimand a couple of the spectators for words of encouragement (“concentrate”) that she deemed to be ‘instructions’ to the players! Well done Adrian and well played Jonathan. Report by Dudley Fuller U19 County Team Manager |
