Ladies Senior County Squash Weekend

LADIES COUNTY TEAM - Division One South

STAGE ONE WEEKEND 22nd - 23rd November

Held at East Anglia Tennis and Squash Club, Norwich, Norfolk.

Team:
Zoe Smith (Broxbourne)
Isobel Smith (HCC)
Elke Rubsam (Haileybury)
Maureen Winter (Broxbourne)
Sheila Blake (Broxbourne)
Laura Taylor (Cannons St Albans).

Our first plan of action worked out very well. This was to leave at 6.00a.m. Saturday morning and get to Norwich in time to watch the rugby ! We arrived at the club at 8.55 a.m. in time to be offered tea and coffee and bacon rolls by the host club. We settled down and spent the next couple of hours jumping and screaming until eventually England were victorious.

With all our nervous energy spent, we then had to re-group and get ready for our first match. This was against Cambridgeshire. A good performance all round and we won 4 – 1.

Our match in the afternoon was against Essex, a much stronger and younger team! Laura and Sheila lost to very strong opposition but Elke put in a sterling performance, on court for over hour, 8-2 down in the fifth game and managed to win 10-8, well done. Unfortunately Zoe and myself lost our matches so all Elke’s effort was in vain and we lost the match 4 – 1.

Following an early (for our standards) evening we were raring to go on Sunday. This match was against the host county Norfolk and we needed to win. Unfortunately for us, they had Cassie Jackman playing for them! However we got off to a great start with Sheila and Elke winning their matches. Maureen was two games up but was unlucky losing 10-8 in the fifth. Zoe played well against Cassie Jackman but obviously lost 3-0. It was all on my game and lack of fitness told and I lost 3-0. We therefore lost the match 3-2. We came third overall and even if we had won the last match it wouldn’t have made any difference points wise, we still would have come third.

Great performance by all the team, well done. Second weekend is at the end of March 2004.
