Nick Matthew has been crowned World
No.1 with the release of the Professional Squash Association (PSA) rankings
on the 1st June.
Matthew is the first Englishman to hold the top spot since fellow
Yorkshireman Lee Beachill in 2004. Victory over Egyptian Karim Darwish in
the Sky Open in Cairo ensured Matthew tops the PSA world rankings for the
first time. This follows reigning world number one Ramy Ashour’s defeat in
straight games by Darwish in the other semi-final.
He lost the opening game against Darwish 6-11 but took the next three games
11-7, 12-10, 13-11 to claim the 14th Tour title of his career and his 28th
victory in a row. The win was Matthew’s second successive Super Series
trophy of 2010 and he also tops the Super Series.
Matthew said: "It still hasn’t sunk in that I’m the
World No.1. I’ve worked really hard to achieve it so I’m going to enjoy a
short holiday before getting back on court. I’m looking forward to the
Commonwealth Games in October now and am confident of bringing a Gold medal
home.” |
