National Club Champs 2006

Triple Crown

Congratulations to Alastair Ambrose and the men's 1st team who completed a unique 'treble' for the second successive season by winning the Herts Senior Cup last night beating Potters Bar 3-2 in a very close Final.
Daryl Selby and Iain Higgins went on first and won their respective matches 3-1. Then Neil Hitchens and John McFarlane lost both of their matches 9-6 in the fifth leaving it to Olly Dixon to win the decisive match 3-0 for the loss of 3 points! Well done.
This follows Stortford's recent triumph of winning both Herts and Essex Division 1 Leagues this season.

B/Stortford beat Colets 3-2!

First on was Galen and Clive, in what proved to be the decisive match Galen was 8-5 up in the fifth and had two chances to win the match, the first rally ended with a let and then Clive won the next to keep him in the match, Galen hit the next 4 shots into the tin off the serve to go 9-8 down, Clive missed his opportunity but Galen took his and the match 10-9 with a brave 'stroke' awarded to Galen by Alan Thomson.

Earlier, Paul Davis took out Harry Leitch in a fractious match, the first game was very tough but Paul proved too strong and after a late resurgence from an argumentative Harry held on to make the match score 1-1.

Peter and Alex shared the first two games and at 7-6 to Peter in the third had chances to take the game but Alex held on to win it 9-7 and the match 3-1. 2-1 to Colets.

Meanwhile Iain Higgins was struggling with an inspired performance from Danny, Iain fought back from 7-4 down to win the first game but then both players contributed to a match peppered with lets and discussion with the referee spoiling the game for the viewer, Iain was 2-1 and 3-0 down in the fourth game when Danny pulled an old hamstring injury and was forced to retire. 2-2.

It was down to the World number 5 & 7 to do battle, at 3-2 in the first game both players agreed to change courts after condensation had made the court unplayable, Anthony took the first game 9-3 but Nick fought back to take the second 10-9 drawing oohs and aahs from the crowd. From there Anthony went into overdrive and took the next two games 9-1 9-1 for Bishop's Stortford, sending the jubilant team and supporters for the first time to Nottingham for the National Finals in May.

Many Thanks to Bishop's Stortford team sponsor Alastair Ambrose who's 'Stortford Hazard' team shirts inspired the team to victory, to the 20 strong supporters from B/Stortford who travelled 2 hours around the North Circular to watch the match and to Colets for their generous hospitality.

Well done to the Ladies first team in Essex Division 1 who have won the League.

I just thought I would let you know that we had our last match of the season last night against Dragons. I think I mentioned that it was a top of the table battle, with the team winning ending up winning the spring league.

It was  close fought match, Sharmila (at 2) played Sarah Lochrie. She went 2-0 down but the came back to 2-2 only to lose in the fifth 10-8. I then went on (at 3) not expecting to do anything much with the way I have been playing lately but that's how it goes. I was playing Barbara Sanderson and managed to beat her 3-0, only the second time I've managed to beat her. So the match hung on Julie-Anne (at 1) against Colleen Campbell. Colleen had been on holiday in India for the last 2 weeks and was clearly under the weather. Julie-Anne took great advantage of this and rapidly went 2-0 up. At this point Colleen started playing better and pulled back to 2-2. At this stage with everything even there was great tension. I had already worked out that if Colleen won 3-2 the title would have been shared, but Julie-Anne managed to get back into the match and won the final game 9-5 to give us victory and the title.

So we won the match and the title for the spring. This means that it is between us and Kingswood to go through to the area final (Kingswood won the autumn session). They are deciding whether we should have a play-off or whether as we had more points overall we should go through. I think we will find out tomorrow.

Well done once again to all those teams.

Tonight the mens 1st team are playing the Herts Senior Cup Final against Potters Bar. The match takes place at Potters Bar and starts at 7pm the Stortford team is Daryl Selby, Iain Higgins, Neil Hitchens, John McFarlane and Oliver Dixon. Good Luck.

Don't forget the end of season matches on Friday night, with 30 players already signed up to play it should be a great night.
Regards,
