Loud & Proud!!!

Dear Squash players,

In the cold light of day, I have now had the opportunity to sit back and reflect on one of the most amazing evenings of squash that I have been involved with. The level of support for both sides, which surfaced last night was breath taking. I am not disappointed to be on the loosing side, but feel privileged to have been part of a team that overcame a great hurdle (Sue Rose's withdrawal on the day, due to Chicken Pox!) to push a very experienced Lexden team, so close.

It would not have been possible this season, but for the huge financial support of Norman Elliott of Triage and Geoff Long of TVS. Many thanks to both of them on behalf of the team.

When we left Broxbourne Sports Club yesterday afternoon, I was confident enough to say to Gordon Wyper that I thought our winning margin could be 4-1. But for a gnat's whisker, that prediction almost came true. Danny Meddings who is currently on a family holiday in Ibiza, flew back just for the match, before flying back out to rejoin his family this morning! Commitment like that, along with sheer dogged determination provided by Alister Walker, who despite being match ball down, and came back to win in the fifth, made all the hard work put in during the season worthwhile. His win was the icing on the cake, and he could arguably be referred to as the National League Player of the Year (11 wins from 12 matches this season).

The heartache that Rod & Mark must feel is tremendous. Rod, unbeaten this season, until last night, had his chance to repeat the 3-0 drubbings that he has handed Simon Parka, twice this season, but let his grip slip in the second game to open the door for Parke to gain a foothold, which proved decisive.

Mark, always give 110% and thrives in a pressure cooker atmosphere. But when you live 'on the edge', sometimes you have to accept that things won't go your way. His defeat last night, by David Evans, will be avenged in their next meeting, I have no doubt of that.

We will now look forward to hosting another 'SeaFresh' Tournament later this year with a substantially increased prize fund, and a much larger field of players. Further news to follow.

Many thanks also to Grant & Helen who managed to get everyone into their seats & back on the coach's at the end of the night. My head has just stopped thumping!

Andy Booth
