UPHILL BATTLE FOR SQUASH

Anthony Richardson writes from Italy: "It's an uphill battle at the moment. The telegenic aspect of the sport is great now, with the all glass courts and oversize balls. However, the sport is dying in many areas. There are fewer and fewer kids being inducted into the sport. I feel that this is a general malaise in sport and squash suffers the most.

"Schools are the place where a participation in any sport should be encouraged. Volleyball, badminton, netball, hockey, football, swimming, gymnastics, athletics, what happened to sport in schools? If you give kids participation in sport they will look for other sports to take an interest in.

"Also, small sports clubs are dying. This has been helped on by the growth of Yuppy PLC Leisure Clubs. They offer no encouragement or sponsorship or initiative for local youth teams. They cost a fortune and are certainly outside the reach of the average squash player."
